General topic of the unit: Handsome is as handsome does
Topic of the class: Make-up
Goals of the class:
1)      Practical: to learn new vocabulary; to develop ability of oral communication.
2)      Educative: to form culture of communication, to form positive attitude toward foreign language.
3)      Educational: to compare particular phenomena of foreign language with the same phenomena of the native language.
4)      Developing: to develop ability to take part in communication on foreign language. 

Warm-up activity

 Goal: to repeat lexical material of the previous classes.
Students should answer the question:           
What part of the body/ feature of the face is important for ... ?
  • a photo/top model
  • a cook
  • a ballet dancer
  •  a pianist
  • a sommelier (a wine steward in a restaurant or hotel)
  •  long-distance runner
  • mime artist.

Text ‘Are You Classic, Dramatic or Natural?’


  1.   Read and translate the text;
  2.  Write out all the items of make-up mentioned in it;
  3.  Look at the examples of make-up mentioned in the text and describe:
  • Classic [Supposed answer: classic red lips and skin tones on the eyes with blush, it is a “safe” look for all women with all skin tones and face shapes. It highlights the lips with a bold color and attracts the attention.]

  • Dramatic [Supposed answer: eyes and eyebrows are accented with a bold color, a plum or mauve [məuv] eye shadow and a pink lipstick are used to accent features, while adding dramatic tone to makeup. She has her hair set up, which allows her makeup and features to be accentuated, and adds a dramatic look to the makeup.] 
  • Natural [Supposed answer: this makeup emphasizes the skin color. For this makeup skin colored eye shadow, a neutral blush (or bronzer) and faint pink lip-gloss are used. The eyes are accented by using natural colors and all attention is drawn toward the natural features of the face.]

Task 1

  • If you were a manager
  • If you were a waitress 

Task 2

Goal: to use new lexical material on the level of sentence.
What do we use following items for? 
  • lipstick [women put it on for colouring the lips];
  • nail polish [women apply it to the fingernails or toenails to colour them or make them shiny];
  • face powder [applied to a person's face for making the skin tone even];
  • toner [a substance which you can put on your skin, for example to clean it or make it less oily].
